We are thrilled to announce that Representative Steny Hoyer will be giving the opening remarks as well as Ann Chafin, Assistant State Superintendent at the Maryland State Department of Education. The opening session will also feature a panel of community leaders from around Southern Maryland, including: Dr. Michael Martirano, Superintendent of St. Mary's County Public Schools; Dr. Jack Smith, Superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools; Mrs. Judy Estep, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for Charles County PUblic Schools; Dr. William Hite, Superintendent of Prince George's County Public Schools, and; Captain Stephen Schmeiser, Commanding Officer at Patuxent Naval Air Station. ADULTS can look forward to workshops featuring topics specifically for military families, men and fathers, and English language learning families. There will be workshops for parents of children of all ages related to young children and developmental stages, behavior management, and helping children with reading and math at home. |
CHILDREN ages 2-9 will be provided with child care for free by staff from Leonardtown High School and St. Mary's County Public Schools. Children will play lots of fun games during the day and enjoy a Story Time session with Tess Goldwasser of the St. Marys County Public Library. |
YOUTH ages 10-18 will participate in the Youth Leadership Academy, featuring a choice of workshops in the morning session and a variety of activities in the afternoon. The Academy will feature a panel of entrepreneurs and leadership experts, including Delegate John Bohanan, who will speak about the meaning and importance of good leadership. |
